How to Spend a Day on St. Maarten

Updated: Feb 9

St.Maarten is an island that is split in half. One half is Dutch and the other is French. Our cruise ship arrived on the Dutch side.

Our first time to St. Maarten:

The first time we visited St.Maarten, we walked to the main beach by the cruise called Great Bay Beach. The beach was packed with beach chairs and umbrellas with many vendors offering you their prices for chairs/umbrellas. We set up with chairs that were 2 for $20 with an umbrella and enjoyed a relaxing day at the beach. I knew the next time we visited St. Maarten I wanted to visit a less busy beach. Don't forget to stop at the cheese shop on the walk to the beach. They have a ton of cheese to taste and bring back with you!

Our second time to St. Maarten:

We chose to visit Mullet Bay Beach on the Dutch side. From the cruise ship, we walked into town and found Back Street. Front Street is the main shopping street and behind that is the obvious name, Back Street. You can catch a bus anywhere on Back Street by waving down the bus and speaking to the driver. We read online that the bus to Mullet Bay was #2. The bus we stopped had no one on it, and no number for the destination. When we said we were going to Mullet Bay, the driver put that in the window as the destination and away we went. We paid $2 per person one way. The ride took about 45 minutes, but this included a 10 minute stop while we waited for a bridge to lift for a yacht. The bus dropped us off at Maho Beach (where everyone goes to take pictures of the planes landing). From there we walked west for 10 minutes to Mullet Bay. Beach chairs were 2 for $15 with an umbrella. At the end of the day, we walked to the street and waited for the bus by the golf course/pharmacy. The bus should have a sign in the window saying Philipsburg.

My husband loves taking wave photos
